Finding Your Social Media Niche in 2023: How I Accidentally Found Mine

I didn’t ask to be a content creator, it all started with one viral video.

It’s 2023, and TikTok has grown to be the top social media app for Gen Z and its descendants. There are already a ton of well known creators on the app with millions of followers. Many topics are highly saturated and makes you think how you will stand out in this competitive crowd.

My advice: Just post.

I started my TikTok in March 2023 and it quickly grew to over 10,000 followers within a month from one viral video. I did not do any prior research on what’s hot and trendy, I just happened to post something that I am passionate about, which was journaling. My video was simply an overview of the journals that I own and how I like to use them. The video has nearly a million views and hundreds of thousands of likes.

What many people do not understand is how big the world really is. We all know that there are 8 billion people on this planet, but do you really know how big of a number that is?

I didn’t think my video about my journals would go viral, but it did, and brought thousands of followers with it. My point is, no matter how much you believe no one can relate to your interests, there are people who always will.

One of the reasons why the fitness community has so many influencers, is because people see themselves in different creators. For instance, you may want to follow a fitness influencer because they are the same height as you and you do not have any other representation. The key is to be that representation.

What will make your content unique is that it comes from you. While you share something that many others may also enjoy, such as makeup, you are still sharing a part of you and that makes your content unique.

To figure out what your niche is, think of the things that you seem to be really good at. Perhaps you are good at thrifting and putting outfits together, or you have a family recipe that you are an expert at making, or you figured out the fastest way to clean a bathroom, or you have hacks for lazy college students.

Whatever it is that you are good at, just post it.

Once you have that one viral video, it is so easy from there. People will comment with follow up questions or wanting to see more, and that will give you ideas to continue making content within your newly discovered niche. It is so much easier than you think!
